The course will offer an understanding of the changes in the social roles, social relationships, biological functioning, and psychological processes that occur as people grow older. Students will learn to apply the sociological perspective to the process of aging, to the relevant social institutions which serve the elderly, and to current policies and laws impacting the aged. Specific emphasis will be placed on major life transitions, gender, racial and ethnic differences in aging, and the economic and political issues that influence aging in contemporary society.
